Plovdiv’s beloved Cinema Under the Stars returns for its fifth edition on June 18. The screenings will once again take place in open green spaces throughout the city — including Youth Hill, Raycho Kirkov Park (in the Kyuchuk Paris neighborhood), Kamenitsa Park, Rotary Park, Lauta Park, Ruzha Park, Proslav Park, Ribnitsa Park, and Kamenitsa Park.
Viewers will enjoy 15 exciting, FREE screenings, with the summer film fiesta kicking off on June 18 at Youth Hill with the hit Bulgarian film Gundi – A Love Legend. The film follows the life of the legendary athlete — from his meeting with Velichka Markova – Lita, to the tragic events of June 30, 1971.
Another Bulgarian title on the program is Don’t Close Your Eyes, a film about faith, love, and healing that is sure to leave no one indifferent. It is also the first feature film based on an Orthodox Christian novel. Created from the book of the same name by Martin Ralchevski, the movie has already received several awards at international festivals.
One more powerful title featured in this year’s edition of Cinema Under the Stars is Without Wings! Written and directed by Niki Iliev, the film is based on the true story of Bulgarian Paralympian Mihail Hristov. At the age of 15, Mihail lost both of his arms in a tragic accident. Yet his desire to live a full life overcame the trauma — and he began training relentlessly. He competes in the 100m, 200m, and long jump. At his very first competition in Dubai, he won a bronze medal in the long jump, pushing the top-ranked athlete off the leaderboard with his final jump. Today, Mihail holds two world titles, eight European records, and numerous other accolades.
In addition to some of the biggest blockbusters from the past year, the selection includes three more Bulgarian films, one Italian comedy, one Croatian biographical film, and three animated movies, including the Oscar-winning Flow
All screenings begin at 9:00 PM, with a short film shown before the main feature.
Feel free to bring something comfortable to sit on (seating is provided but tends to fill up quickly), and perhaps something to keep the mosquitoes at bay.
