We took a virtual tour of Plovdiv and stumbled upon several exceptionally interesting spots that even long-time locals might not know about.
We discovered “Freedom” in the middle of the Maritsa River, not far from the "Ostrova" Hotel, and now we know where the "Beautiful View" is. It leads to a marked spot on Bunardzhik Hill, where the panorama is truly stunning, especially on a summer evening—facing the sunset and Dzhendem Hill.
However, there is one specially marked location that seems to be either for insiders or for those who accidentally stumble upon it during a virtual walk, like we did. The "Drinkers' Gazebo" is located in Kuchuk Paris, near “Macedonia” Boulevard—opposite "Mr. Bricolage" and the "Rodopi" bus station, right next to the Concrete Bridge. It’s probably emblematic for alcohol enthusiasts in the area, but it’s likely not the only one spot.
Surely, each of us can think of a few similar places, most often in inter-block spaces, neighborhood parks, and even near children’s playgrounds. It’s not uncommon for small gathering spots to be built in front of residential buildings, like one block nearby where residents have even set up special plastic covers to shield themselves from the weather and extend the use of the gathering spot throughout the year.
Such structures are actually quite common in other areas, especially around older buildings. Sometimes it might be a gazebo, other times a bench, and not infrequently just a small table in front of a 24-hour shop. In the past, a common gathering spot used to be the small booths where, alongside lemonade and Coca-Cola, the best-selling items were mini bottles of vodka and rakia.
If you zoom out on Google Maps, you’ll find another "Drinkers' Gazebo" marked as a tourist attraction in Dupnitsa. Well, it hasn’t made it to the list of Bulgaria's top 100 landmarks yet, but if you’re in the area, you might stop by and get acquainted with the locals.
