Opening! Christo for Beginners - Stage I - Luchezar Boyadjiev

CHRISTO FOR BEGINNERS
By Luchezar Boyadjiev

August – November 2022

Sarieva Open Arts Program

“Christo for Beginners” by Luchezar Boyadjiev is a project about what’s private and shared in both the physical space and the imagination. The artist engages with the public space and that involves the urban, the media, and the virtual environment. Luchezar Boyadjiev is activating them with artworks, visions, exhibition displays, actions and lectures while involving the collaboration of both his fellow citizens and colleagues. Luchezar Boyadjiev is a known expert on the projects, the practices and the methodologies developed and used by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. However, this is the first time he is implementing such a project as an artist, rather than as an art critic, a theoretician, a lecturer or a historian of art. “Christo for Beginners” is the pilot project of the Sarieva / Gallery and the Open Arts Foundation within the Sarieva Open Arts program.

Walk and Talk - Lecture tour in urban environment with Luchezar Boyadjiev
Saturday, August 6th, 2022, various locations, Plovdiv, 10:30 - 12:30
(Gathering of the group of participants in front of artnewscafe, 10:30)

For good and/or for bad, in our country, just like elsewhere in the Balkans, our centuries-long history is both alive and constantly challenged, everywhere by everyone. It tends to create the conditions for the production of much more actual reality – living, breathing and throbbing with energy, then our multitude of small states and proud peoples can realistically handle. Sometimes the world history is “unloading” all its might on our Balkan shoulders. But we are pretending not to notice our chaotic vitality; indeed we are living here and now as if this is the “always and everywhere”. The heroes, the leading characters of these ages-long processes either already have dedicated monuments at 5-to-15 meters high, or are the targets of constantly debated projects for such totems, idols and fetishes of the long-gone past.

What might happen though, if the debate on saturating the public space in our cities with monuments of the glorious past and heroes, is supplemented by the whole register of art and culture heroes from the modern and contemporary age? For instance, does Belgrade need a monument to Marina Abramović? Does Zagreb need a monument to Mangelos (www.moma.org/artists/29439); to Sanja Iveković or Ivan Mestrović? Does Sarajevo need a monument to Braco Dimiriević or to Jusuf Hadzifejzović although these two are very much alive and kicking artists? We do have a monument indeed to Vladimir Dimitrov, the Master but do we also need to have monuments to Boris Angeloushev and George Papazov in Sofia, or to Jules Paskin in Vidin? How big do these need to be, and where are we to place them – where they lived or where we need to impress both ourselves and the tourists? Should they be 10, 15, or 20 meters high? And last but not least, whet kind of visual style do we need to ask for from the artists who would compete with their visions in a public tender?

The goal of the project “Christo for Beginners” is to create a space for debate and to kick of this debate – asking questions about the past, as well as about the future in our culture. The first stage of the project “Christo for Beginners” by Luchezar Boyadjiev within Sarieva Open Arts program will manifest an “exploratory mandate” for the creation of a massive, equestrian monument to Christo in Plovdiv. The so titled exhibition in Sarieva / Gallery and the „Walk and Talk” lecture tour given by the artist in the city environment will investigate the format, the locations, the public attitudes and the fantasy needed for the erection of such a monument.

The exhibition will display the scale model for the monument created by Luchezar Boyadjiev, his project drawings, visualizations and other material. Within the format of the „Walk and Talk“, we will walk to and talk about various potential locations for the erection of the monument.

Comedy production "The Dirty Bastard"

Lack of empathy, superficial charm and high self-esteem are just some of the traits that can shape both a serial killer and the most successful manager.
It is no surprise, then, that the ideas of a Swedish psychologist used by Spanish playwright Jordi Galseran have received such a well-received reception.
In one of his last productions, the director Plamen Panev made his version of the text and invited Nikolay Urumov, Asen Blatechki, Svetlana and Hristo Bonin to become part of the team of comedy, which is a wonderful mix of psycho-thriller, crime, intellectual puzzle and reality show. .
The vivid comedy "The Dirty Bastard" is a show focusing on the brutal relationship between big business and small business, ready to sacrifice morals for the sake of a career and good pay.
A show full of intrigue, many surprising twists, lots of laughter, fun and different characters. And the viewers have the opportunity to participate with their assumptions about how it will end - who is the proxy?
Be an accomplice in this fun!

Enchanted Soul Exhibition

From August 8 to 31, on "Raiko Daskalov" street, in front of the former BNB building, the world-famous Bulgarian artist Martin Dzachkov will exhibit twenty paintings in the heart of Plovdiv. The name of the exhibition is Enchanted Soul, and eight new portraits are presented to the public for the first time. The artist has been working in Paris for ten years in one of the most difficult genres of fine art - portraiture. He is a recognized master of poetic collage. Through the poetic names of his paintings and the symbolism in their matter, the artist paints the magic of the human soul.

Martin Dzachkov was born in Lovech, where he graduated from the language high school. There are only 4 such classes in the whole of France, for each of which 25,000 people apply every year. He is one of the 20 who are accepted. The first field of the Bulgarian artist is fashion design. In Montpellier, he created his brand - "Dzhachkov", which existed actively for 4 years, during which he built his clientele with a number of famous names. Martin works only with leather and creates unique clothes. The "Dzhachkov" brand reaches the defile in London and Paris, and among its customers is Leticia Holliday - the ex-wife of the late French rock and roll legend Johnny Holliday.

The first thing he painted in his life was a portrait of Peggy Guggenheim, which was exhibited in London. He made it with a specific technique and achieved success long before he began studying at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. While studying, he sold his designer clothes to celebrities, created his own publishing house, and his portraits are now part of the collections of the biggest fine art collectors in Europe and America.

A work by the artist stands next to an original by Salvador Dali, and the US ambassador to Paris buys one of his first paintings. The genre "poetic collage" invents itself. From 2016 to the present, Dzachkov has made over 180 collages in the most difficult genre of fine art - that of the portrait. Some collages sometimes take more than 200 hours to create and complete, and each one contains between 500 and 4,000 pieces of paper imagery. And from the beginning of August to the end of October, Martin Dzachkov's paintings take over Plovdiv!

It's all here, collected in billions of pieces of paper images. The Bulgarian roses in which the self-portrait "There is a Martin" sinks, the Eiffel Tower and the magic of the night in the portrait "Black pepper", the flesh of the marble images of the Pietà and Picasso's drawings locked in the leather corset of the body of the portrait "Hanging in impossible mourning ", the beauty of immortality in the portrait "Turitopsis", scars, hunger and innocence in the painting "Hungry and Holy" and many others. If other works of art require time to be felt and understood, Martin Dzachkov's paintings do not give rest to the eye as soon as they fall into it. All the details in them keep in suspense and provoke the audience's perceptions, as if lines of poetry, in which every word is chosen with all its weight and precision, and when one reads the whole image, one discovers truth. Try to imagine a portrait of Dzhachkov without even one of the images that are present in it, which at first glance has no place there... It is impossible. Apart from pictorial virtuosity, the most impressive is the sense of matter, space, color and symbolism , which the artist unfolds with a swing in his paintings.
What game does the paper stroke maestro play?

Martin Dzachkov tells:

I want my paintings to breathe and the audience to be left breathless. In front of the white canvas I am at war, as if a living person is standing under the water of a river and I have to see him. But the water now glistens, then floods him deeper, and then I can see him clearly again. When I cannot see him physically, I see his soul best with my soul.
And then I feel like the paper is raining down on the canvas like water.
Drop by drop and image by image. In the process of work, I strive to reach a moment of such intensity that I can lose sight of all technicalities and submit my eyes to what I see with my soul.

Day of Ashure

According to the tradition of this day, Muslims in Bulgaria cook ashura and distribute it to their neighbors, regardless of whether they are Christians or Muslims. The celebration of Day of Ashure is a rallying point for all of humanity and is considered a common value of all major religions. The organizers invite the people of Plovdiv to join the celebration, which will begin with a short greeting and an explanation of the meaning of the messages of "Ashure Day" for peace, solidarity, understanding, compassion, tolerance.

The "Day of Ashure" is a holiday that is celebrated according to the Muslim calendar, but has its genesis from all Abrahamic religions. The holiday is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Muharram according to the Muslim calendar. This day is marked in history with many important events for the human race. Such an event is the end of the Flood and the landing of Noah's Ark. On this day, Adam (or Adem) is taken out of Paradise, then meets Eve again.

The "Day of Ashure" is also associated with the rescue of the Jews from Egypt. Then they have nothing to eat, and they receive a command from the Most High to gather whatever they find and make a feast out of it. Thus, in this feast there are beans, chickpeas, sugar, wheat, milk, and today we know it as Ashura.

Besides the distribution of Ashure in front of the Jumaya Mosque, young people in traditional Turkish costumes will treat the guests to Turkish sherbet, and then there will be a ritual - sema, dedicated to the holiday, which will be performed by the only dervish in Bulgaria - Vasil Tosev from Plovdiv.

Concert "Night at the Jazz Club" – 8 August

The three outstanding artists - Lyubomir Denev - piano, Vesela Morova - vocals and Petar Momchev - saxophone, await the audience on August 8, Monday, from 8:00 p.m. at Culture Hotspot Milcho Leviev - "Ivan Chernozemski" House in the Old Town, Tsanko Lavrenov St. " 5.

When 7-8 years ago Ljubo Denev - an established jazz composer and pianist, who participated in a number of European jazz festivals and the author of emblematic Bulgarian jazz works, persistently searched for a suitable singer for his new musical ideas, he without hesitation settled on the graduate of the Berkeley College in Boston - Vesela Morova.

Her musicality, mobile voice, improvisational skills and general culture are more than convincing and they start working together, with Lubomir Denev composing several new pieces especially for her. This also leads to the logical decision that Vesela's first solo CD will be entirely composed by Denev.

In 2016, they recorded the album "Night in the Jazz Club", together with Dimitar Karamfilov on the double bass and Dimitar Semov on the drums, and Petar Momchev - soloist of the BNR Big Band - was invited for the saxophone parts. Numerous club concerts, appearances at festivals (Varna summer, Bansko, etc.), television shows and many others follow.

Ljubo Denev considers himself the successor of Milcho Leviev and the continuation of his work. He was nursed on the music of Jazz-Focus 65 since his school years, felt its influence in his first jazz-opuses (late 70s), met the great musician at his home in Los Angeles (1984), arranged for big band several of his pieces, and their relationship strengthened during their joint work - Ljubo conducted the concert for Milcho's 60th anniversary in Hall 1 of the NDK-Sofia. At the Jazz Festival in Bansko 2020, Lyubomir Denev, Vesela Morova and Petar Momchev present a program entirely of Leviev's works, in his memory.

At "Chamber Stage Plovdiv" in Culture spot Milcho Leviev, the Morova-Denev-Momchev trio will present a unique jazz performance based on their album "Night in the Jazz Club". Along with the improvisations on author's themes by Lubomir Denev, classic standards by Cole Porter, Talonius Monk, Milcho Leviev and others will be performed, combined with the composer's poems from his cycle "Rhythmed Words".

Soulcrane was formed as a trio in early 2015 by trumpeter Matthias Schwengler. The group performs its own original compositions, its musical direction constantly changing in response to new ideas. All three musicians bring their own influences to the band to create a collective and innovative sound, a blend of novelty and tradition. The three Cologne-based musicians work and compose together, maintaining the warm and chamber music nature of their work.

For their tour in Bulgaria, Soulcrane invites Dimitar Llelev - saxophone. He greatly contributes to the intimate atmosphere created by the band on stage, fitting equally well with the quiet dynamics, depth and soulful balladry of the sound, but also with the harmonically complex and dynamic-rhythmic amplitudes of the stage.

"A few minutes until the wedding! If only there was a way to turn back time, because everything is upside down, therefore - upside down. Under Bill's marriage bed, a real bomb is ticking with an incendiary mixture of tangled situations, surprising twists, unexpected events and an explosive humor.Which of the characters will be the first to ignite the spark? Bill, who along with his bachelor life, may also part with the real one? Rachel, who may go from being a permanent wife to a temporary one? Tom, whose girlfriend is "here" instead of to be "there"? Or Julie the maid who everyone mistakes for a call girl?
If you're taking advantage of the wedding invitation and coming with friends, husbands or future fiances to one of Britain's longest-running comedies, check out every corner of the hotel room where author Robin Howden brought them together. Concert "Love and the life of a woman" - Ina Kancheva

The "Cultural Perspectives" Foundation, organizer of the 4th edition of the CULTURAMA festival, which will be held in the fall in Sofia, is pleased to invite Plovdiv music lovers to an exciting event that will take place in a few days in the city under the hills. The autumn cycle of CULTURAMA begins with a concert by Ina Kancheva and the British quartet Consone, which bears the romantic name "Love and the Life of a Woman", and in its program we will hear works by R. Schumann, F. Mendelssohn and G. Mahler.

The Consone Quartet was the first early instrument quartet to be selected as a BBC New Generation Artist, quickly making a name for themselves with their honest and expressive interpretations of classical and early romantic repertoire. Winner of the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Award, and in 2022 they receive the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust (BBT) Scholarship. The quartet has been enthusiastically received in London's Wigmore Hall, King's Place, St. Martin in the Fields, as well as at festivals in Edinburgh, Cheltenham and Buxton, etc. Played at the Paris Philharmonic String Quartets Biennale and at the Lyon Auditorium in France; at Concertgebouw Brugge and AMUZ in Belgium; in the REMA Show-case; in the Concerts d'été à St Germain in Switzerland and on tour in Bolivia and Peru.

Ina Kancheva is an artist who fascinates and captivates the audience with her music. An opera singer with a knack for reincarnation, she sings with ease and shares her joy of singing in a surprisingly natural way. The wide range and color spectrum of her dramatic coloratura soprano is evident in her rich vocal repertoire – from baroque to bel canto to the art of song. Her voice with virtuosity recreates the musical parts in a new way and creates one-of-a-kind vivid interpretations.

The intriguing creative collaboration of the British quartet for ancient instruments with the stellar Bulgarian soprano promises the Plovdiv audience an exceptional musical performance and delight for the senses.
