The Cave Laboratory, Old Border, Topcheto Cave, Rozhen Pylon, Chepelarska River Springs tourist trail was established by the idea of Marin Gospodinov, director of the Rhodope Karst Museum, Chepelare.
The route starts from the fork of the old road to the village of Levochevo. It is circular and has a total length of about 9 km, passing through several interesting and emblematic places in the Rhodope Mountains.
The first stop is the Sbirkova Cave, a beautiful cave with sinter lakes, used in the past as an underground laboratory by the cave club in Chepelare. It’s been known for a long time, and in the 1950s it was a favorite place for excursions for vacationers in Pamporovo.
After that, the path goes to the remains of the old border of Bulgaria, as well as to more recent military structures (trenches, burials, border stones, etc.) built in the same places.
Continuing along the marked path, you’ll reach the Topcheto Cave, famous for the legendary Captain Petko Voyvoda. It is an abyssal cave in which he hid the combat equipment of the squad he commanded, including his cherry cannon so that it doesn’t fall into enemy hands.
Leaving the Rozhen area, tourists will see the popular Rozhen Pylon. It is the highest in the European Union and is placed at an impressive altitude of 1430 m. The choice of the height of the pylon of 111 meters is not accidental - the area of Bulgaria is 111,000 square kilometers.
Continuing from the left of the building with the round windows along the dirt road, you will reach the springs of the Chepelarska (Chaya) River. From there, after about 20 minutes, the route ends at the starting point.
The marking is of red arrows. Information signs have been placed at the sites along the route. It's also the perfect idea for a weekend getaway, especially if you've covered most of the routes in the region.
