To prepare a ranking of the establishments under the hills is a real challenge. We've shared with you, our readers, our personal favorites for dining and entertainment more than once, and we've often received feedback that some of our preferences are subjective.
The selection in this article, however, was prepared by the famous Restaurant Guru platform, whose algorithm selects the best bars and restaurants in Plovdiv based on reviews left in popular rating websites such as Michelin, Frommer's, Zagat, Zomato, Yelp, Google, Foursquare, Facebook. With its help, you can easily select a restaurant by filters such as: type of cuisine, location, prices, etc.
The list of their recommended places under the hills for 2023 is ready and we share with you what places you shouldn’t miss in Plovdiv according to Restaurant Guru:
The first place among 1,269 restaurants according to visitor ratings for this year goes to Aylyakria. We also shared in our recent Kapana restaurant rankings that the gastro bar is totally worth the good reviews and their cream soups are unique and the pulled pork sandwich is legendary!
The second honorable position goes to a probably hidden gem under the hills – the Raya restaurant. It is located a little off the main street and is not so touristy. On weekdays they offer a delicious lunch menu with a variety of new specials, and the prices are a touch more moderate compared to the ideal downtown area.
Tams House takes the bronze for 2023 and we are not surprised by the good reviews for the place. Its owners - Todor and Melissa, have worked for many years in Michelin-starred restaurants in California and very successfully apply their experience and create for the people of Plovdiv and guests of the city dishes worthy of any establishment, awarded with the high recognition of experienced reviewers from the prestigious ranking. The duck magret is the undisputed star of the menu, and don't miss the dessert - the Egg!
For 2023, the leadership here holds the first craft beer bar under the hills - Cat and Mouse. The establishment is located in the very heart of the creative district of Kapana and offers over 100 types of Belgian, German, Czech, British, Serbian and Bulgarian craft beer. Today, it is a place not only for meetings and entertainment, but has also developed into a complete cultural project and community for communication, exchange of ideas and even the generation of new ventures. Cat and Mouse was the trendsetter of the new era in the district and a few years later, it is still one of the most recognizable places in Plovdiv. The overall symbiosis between the individual projects – bar, guest house, and coworking space, turned it into a trademark of Kapana and Plovdiv, which over the years was written about by media such as the NY Times, Washington Post, Telegraph and a number of others. Be sure to visit its other location on the same street, where you will find the most photographed and colorful house in the area. LOCAL has a focus on local beverage production and with its sheltered courtyard is the perfect location to test quality beers and drinks that are produced in the region and are not mainstream.
Another highly rated venue is the deGUSTOstation wine bar, run by winemakers from Bendida Winery and Bendida Enoteca. Here you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and try white, rosé and red wines from the area. Local grapes such as Mavrud and Rubin are the main focus of the boutique winery.
Judge O'Neills Irish Pub, Temple Bar and Download are also among the preferred places in this category according to reviews on the platforms. All of them are located in the city center and present a different experience to their visitors. Aged whiskey, Guinness on tap and a large TV to watch the latest sports events or a stage for rock bands and musical performances - the truth is that there is something for everyone in Plovdiv and we are convinced that you will quickly find your favorite place to keep coming back under the hills again and again!
