Sometimes the most beautiful projects begin quietly—like a dream. This is how the Private Primary School “Slanchev Luch” (Sunray) was born: from a mother’s desire to create a better, more humane and inspiring educational environment for her child.
As early as 2010, this dream began to take shape. For nearly a decade, with great dedication and a clear personal mission, Mrs. Maria Paeva followed the path from an idea to the construction of her own school building. In 2017, in the southern part of Plovdiv, in the Vitrogona area near the village of Markovo, not just a school but a long-term educational project with a vision for the future was established.

The building, constructed with loan financing, is inspired by the principles of Vastu architecture and sacred geometry. Located at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains, it combines harmony, light, and a close connection to nature—an environment that supports the natural development of children. The spacious yard, green surroundings, and outdoor classroom transform learning into a living experience.
Today, the school educates children from the first kindergarten group up to 7th grade, and next school year it will celebrate its tenth anniversary. The milestone will be marked by the completion of the building’s third floor. It will house a large library, a second sports hall, and a special creative studio designed as a space for weaving, felting, embroidery, and reconnecting with traditional Bulgarian crafts and heritage.

“Slanchev Luch” is much more than an educational institution—it is a philosophy. Here, education goes hand in hand with emotion, freedom, and personal growth. The curriculum builds upon national educational standards while emphasizing deep understanding and the practical application of knowledge. Project-based learning encourages a spirit of exploration, while proven pedagogical approaches such as suggestopedia by Prof. Dr. Georgi Lozanov and Prof. Dr. Evelina Gateva, as well as Sun pedagogy for harmonious personal development, form the foundation of the learning process.
For the youngest students, the school plans to introduce a combined model of Sun pedagogy and Waldorf pedagogy—an approach that places the child at the center and nurtures emotional development, creativity, and inner resilience. A particularly important part of the educational process is the connection with nature and the time spent outdoors. Every possible moment is used for learning and play outside—between the sun and the earth.

Foreign language education is also a priority. English is studied from preparatory groups 3 and 4 up to 7th grade, and from 5th to 7th grade students have the opportunity to study Russian as a second language. The school is a Cambridge preparation center and offers students the opportunity to obtain internationally recognized certificates.
Alongside academic preparation, “Slanchev Luch” places special emphasis on developing children’s talents through creativity and the arts. Every child from 1st to 4th grade studies a musical instrument of their choice—an important part of achieving a balance between science and art.

Traditions are alive at “Slanchev Luch.” Enyovden, Sirni and Mesni Zagovezni, the equinoxes and solstices, and Kukeri rituals are all celebrated. These traditions are closely connected to nature, and the celebrations are not merely dates on the calendar but experiences that reconnect children with their Bulgarian roots.

The goal is not simply the acquisition of knowledge, but the formation of thoughtful, self-aware, and confident individuals.
“Slanchev Luch” is not just a school—it is a dream come true that has become a source of light for dozens of families.
