Ah, summer... We yearn for it all year long, then in Plovdiv we almost always complain as soon as it arrives. In 2024, its official start is on June 20 at 11:50 p.m., but for at least ten days the heat has been raging under the hills and we have already been seriously dreaming of seaside summer weekends and cocktails and cold beers after work.

And here are the real signs the digital guide team has highlighted so that there is no doubt that summer in Plovdiv is here and we won't let it go... at least until December!

The empty streets during the day

As on pleasant days the Main Street is crowded with people and cafes are full, so in the summer season (usually June-September) everything suddenly empties in the hot hours and you can only see some lost person who quickly runs and seeks the shade to do some urgent work.

Going out for dinner/drinks after 8 p.m. at least

Most often during the summer months, the traditional time for an after-work drink is shifted by a few hours and first everyone goes home to cool off, freshen up and then storm the bars. Before that... being outside is a particularly difficult task.

Everyone asks about the opening hours of the pools under the hills

The truth is that even with an air conditioner, the heat in Plovdiv is hard to stand and sometimes you need some water cooling. To be up to date with all the latest swimming pools in and around Plovdiv, don't forget to check the digital guide under the hills.

Bathing in the fountains (most often the dry fountains in the Tsar-Simeon’s Garden)

Technically, this isn’t allowed, but as the temperatures rise, you will often see overheated Plovdiv residents who’ve decided to cool off not only under the thick shadows in the park. The fountains are real fun for children too!

Complaints about the heat

The hottest talking point of the summer season and always a good conversation starter. The complaints start in the morning, when the heat that will surround us until the end of the day and make the city feel like an oven is already starting to be felt.

The inhuman temperatures in the buses

The truth is that there are air conditioners, but... whether and when they are used for their intended purpose is a difficult question. Getting on a well-cooled bus to Plovdiv in the summer is like winning the lottery, and since this doesn't always happen - stock up on fluids and a fan.

Lines outside ice cream places

The ice temptation is always an option to cool down, and especially on weekends, you'll find a line of young and old around our favorite ice cream spots patiently waiting to cool off with their favorite flavor.

The many memes about the heat

You can't be in Plovdiv and not share at least one of them on your Facebook page, as a story on Instagram or as a status on Threads.

A shocking sight for tourists

A very Balkan feature, namely topless men on the streets, and if the heat is very brutal and affects the psyche, even some very lightly dresses women.
