After recently sharing the program for the largest open-air stage in Plovdiv – the Ancient Theatre, today we’ll give you a few more reasons not to miss a visit to the city under the hills during the autumn months.

September is packed with dozens of performances and events, with comedy and humor being the main focus at the Summer Cinema “Orpheus” and the City House of Culture.

Below you’ll find the full program so you can book your spot in advance and enjoy everything that Plovdiv has to offer:

Summer Cinema “Orpheus”

In the summer of 1958, an open-air cinema was built in Plovdiv in a natural hollow on the western side of “Vasil Kolarov” Hill – officially known then as Sahat Tepe. The seats were arranged amphitheatrically, following the terrain’s natural relief, rising one above the other. Two months later – on September 23, in honor of the 60th anniversary of poet Hristo Smirnenski’s birth – the cinema was named after him.

After 1989 it ceased operating, but in early June 2001 Plovdiv Municipality signed a concession contract, and following an investment of almost half a million leva, the cinema reopened in 2003 under the name “Orpheus”. It has a capacity of 1200 seats and three balconies. In spring and summer, it often hosts theatre productions and open-air film festivals.

For September, the program is extremely rich, and the weather is still perfect for open-air performances:

“Boris Hristov” City House of Culture

The building was constructed in the late 1950s as the House of Labor of the General Professional Union and became known as the Trade Union House “Stefan Kiradzhiev”. After 1989 it was widely referred to as the Trade Union House. In 1998, by decision of the Council of Ministers, the building was handed over to the trade unions, which later allowed the municipality to use it for cultural activities.

Since 2011, it has borne the name of the great opera singer Boris Hristov, and in 2013 it was officially reopened after extensive renovation by the then mayor of Plovdiv. Today it hosts numerous theatrical and opera performances, as well as a variety of cultural and social events.
