For the past nine years, the Plovdiv Jazz Fest stage has been part of the world tour itinerary of some of the biggest names in jazz music, but also some of the most active and interesting young artists.
From October 27 to 29, Plovdiv will welcome a number of famous performers from Bulgaria, the USA, Italy, Austria and Brazil.
The main program of the autumn jazz festival will again be at the Boris Hristov House of Culture. It will feature two concerts each night which will begin at 8:00 p.m. This year's emphasis is on instrumental jazz, chamber concerts and guitar in jazz. The result of this combination is six concerts in three days, a side program that will include two more concerts, a book launch, a concert of the youngest in jazz and jam sessions every evening after the main part.
Plovdiv Jazz Fest begins on October 27 with the Award for Overall Contribution to Jazz, which this year will be presented to double bass player Veselin Eko Veselinov.
The evening will continue with his duet with pianist Milen Kukosharov – Das Weltschmerz DueTT.
The second concert will be of another duo, this time combining guitar and double bass. One of the most significant jazz guitarists on the modern stage, Julian Lage, arrives in Plovdiv together with double bassist Jorge Roeder.
October 28 is entirely dedicated to guitarists. The evening will begin with a poetic and virtuosic solo concert by one of the philosophers of the modern European jazz scene
- guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, an ECM Records artist, whose new album will be released on September 29.
After that, the program will continue with a concert by the Brazilian artist Chico Pinheiro. He has participated in projects by Placido Domingo, Brad Mehldau, Kurt Elling, Dave Grusin, Danilo Perez, Bob Mintzer, Herbie Hancock, Brian Blade and many others, and he arrives in the city under the hills with his quartet.
The last evening of Plovdiv Jazz Fest, October 29, is the time of the pianists! The beginning will be set by the virtuoso and young Italian pianist and singer Francesca Tandoi, who is increasingly gaining popularity on the international jazz scene.
Plovdiv Jazz Fest will end with a concert by one of the most exquisite pianists today - Joey Calderazzo. With 15 albums as a leader and Grammy Award winner, Calderazzo has collaborated with musicians of the caliber of Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland. The American pianist has been playing with his trio for a long time, but in Plovdiv he will also arrive with one of the most interesting saxophonists and composers in the world of jazz, Miguel Zenon, named jazz composer of the year by the Association of Jazz Journalists in the USA and 11-time Grammy nominee.
This year, Plovdiv Jazz Fest will also have a preliminary event, which will be part of the accompanying program of the festival. The concert of the trio of the famous pianist Dimitar Bodurov will be on October 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Radio Plovdiv. Characteristic of the group is the dynamic interaction of piano, double bass and drums. The jazz trio is heavily influenced by folk music and classical composition.
Tickets for all concerts are now on sale in the Eventim network.
And in addition to the interesting program of the Jazz Fest and the dozens of events that we can choose from every autumn weekend - you shouldn't miss Plovdiv in October because the city is really dressed in color. All the green areas under the hills are now charmingly quiet and covered with different shades. It's also the perfect time to grab your camera or turn on your phone's camera and take a look around. The leaves are already turning from green to yellow and red, they have not yet completely covered the ground with a dense carpet, and the sun's rays are timidly passing through them in the warmer hours.
Take a walk or have a picnic in the park - use the midday sun to collect some vitamin D and collect positive energy. You can sit on a bench and read, have lunch in nature or why not have a picnic.
Do sports outside - the weather still allows you to keep in shape outdoors and combine your training with a walk at the Rowing base, for example.
And why not spend the day outside the city - use the days off to escape from the city’s bustle and hustle and do something interesting like ride a horse or arrange a hunting trip, and in the evening - just enjoy fascinating jazz!
