A cinema hall, completely untouched by socialism, becomes the home of socialist automobile manufacturing and takes us straight back to childhood with hundreds of forgotten household item

With the arrival of spring and the warmer temperatures, our desire to explore new places around Plovdiv and discover interesting ideas for a day trip naturally grows stronger. It is no surprise that today our path led us to the town of Peshtera and the museum “Cars of Socialism”. Located in the very center of the town, it presents the development and pride of socialist automobile manufacturing during the period from 9 September 1944 to 10 November 1989.

The museum has been created with great care for its visitors. Here you will immerse yourself in an authentic socialist atmosphere, made possible by the fact that it is housed in a fully preserved cinema hall from that era. The walls, ceiling, and stage transport visitors back to memories of joyful moments shared with loved ones while watching films such as “The Elephant – My Friend”, “Winnetou”, “The Peach Thief”, “The Goat Horn”, “Ladies’ Choice”, “A Woman at 33”, and many others.

Here you will also see well-preserved film projectors and sound equipment, childhood toys, vintage radios, signs with socialist slogans, everyday household items, and portraits of notable figures from the era. The exhibition presents not only the fascinating history of the automobiles themselves, but through numerous displays it also reveals the perspectives and aspirations of the ordinary citizen in socialist society regarding the future.

Each vehicle is accompanied by documents, photographs, and postcards from its time. The entire atmosphere of the socialist period comes to life through the carefully arranged and curated exhibits, covering the regime from its beginning to its end.

Although the museum is relatively small, it offers exceptionally well-maintained retro cars and motorcycles that truly take you back in time. The collections are arranged with great attention to detail, and the atmosphere is both authentic and inspiring. It is an ideal place for enthusiasts of classic vehicles and for anyone who feels a touch of nostalgia for the past.
