An exciting memory from Kapana’s past resurfaced over the weekend. Back then, the famous district wasn’t filled with venues as it is today—it was more of a parking spot for downtown cars, with occasional bars tucked away on the streets leading to the Main Street.
Some of the oldest businesses in the area can be found in our article about the first establishments in Kapana, where we highlighted those still operating under the same name and concept.
Older Plovdiv locals, however, surely remember one of the legendary party spots – Club Makalali, which was hugely popular about twenty years ago. In 2012, it relocated with a grand reopening at the Water Palace.
Here’s a short promotional snippet from one of the popular event and entertainment websites of that time:
“A new ultra-modern club in Kapana, just steps away from the Main Street. The interior is lively, filled with African elements, giving the place not only an exotic touch but also a sense of mystery. The feeling intensifies especially at night, when just the view alone can blow your senses – beautiful young people, as if they’ve just stepped off the fashion runway, gently swaying to the rhythm of tribal house music. Is it just an ordinary party, or are they filming a stylish music video here? You’ll find out if you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Makalali.”
A venue with the same name still exists today in our seaside capital, Varna, right on the coastal promenade.
After Makalali, Greek entrepreneur Nikitas Xouxoutas brought the space back to life by opening the restaurant Terzo Mondo. The name translates from Italian as "The Third World". That was also the theme of the cuisine—offering dishes from Thailand, Algeria, Mexico, and many other places. For several years, it was a favorite dining spot for both locals and visitors of Plovdiv. Unfortunately, it closed during the pandemic.
Since then, it has briefly reopened a few times, but never fully restarted. For the last two years, it remained empty and abandoned.
Until a few months ago, when a flurry of renovation and preparation began inside. One of the largest venues in the district has a new owner, and we know it’s set to become a must-visit for lovers of quality meat. Sale Kapana promises the tastiest desserts in town and the most tempting dishes—and we’re eagerly waiting to put our taste buds to the test.
