The airport serves passenger traffic from the entire South Central region and over 200 thousand passengers have passed through it in the last year

 

The airport is located 12 km southeast of Plovdiv — the second largest city in Bulgaria and the cultural capital of the country. Situated in the very heart of the Balkan Peninsula, it serves as a convenient starting point for exploring the region.

Currently, some of the most popular low-cost airlines operate there, along with several charter services. According to airport data, more than 200,000 passengers pass through it annually.

As of January 2026, the destinations offered are: Belfast, Birmingham, Bratislava, London, Manchester, Milan, and Tel Aviv. The ambition is to add more destinations in line with Bulgaria’s winter and summer tourism.

To make the airport more accessible from the city of Plovdiv, a regular and direct shuttle service was introduced last year, coordinated with the flight schedule. It is operated by a private carrier, departing from the stop on “Hristo Botev” Blvd., opposite the “South” bus station, two and a half hours before each flight. After arrival, passengers are picked up 30 minutes after landing and transported back to the city.

From this month, likely due to updates surrounding Bulgaria’s transition to the euro, the fare is now €6 (11.73 BGN) per passenger. For the latest timetable, always refer to the official sources listed on the airport’s website.

Another option for reaching the airport is by private car, which can be left in the parking area. Parking is free for the first 15 minutes. Parking directly in front of the terminal is prohibited, except for passenger drop-off or pick-up. The full parking price list can be found on the airport’s website; a one-week stay costs €46.50 (90.95 BGN).

For the time being, the most convenient option — especially for more than one traveler — remains taking a taxi from Plovdiv. The fare is roughly between 30–40 BGN, depending on the part of the city you are traveling from/to and the traffic conditions.

For reference, the current taxi rates in Plovdiv as of January 2026 are approximately: 1.37 BGN / €0.70 daytime rate and 1.56 BGN / €0.80 nighttime rate. The initial fee is 2.74 BGN / €1.40 during the day and 3.12 BGN / €1.60 at night.
