Recently, on Facebook, we asked if you know when the free day for visiting the museums in Plovdiv is. It turned out that not all of us are aware that there is one day in the month when the entrances to the sites are free but that is not true for all. The team of Lost in Plovdiv gathered for you the details of where, when and who can benefit from this privilege.
We start with the clarification that the prices of museums and galleries in Plovdiv are absolutely acceptable and vary in the order of 5-10 leva, the most expensive is the entrance of Klianti House in Old Plovdiv. There are group and family tickets for visiting. They are an accessible way to explore the culture and history not only of our city but also of Bulgaria. And here’s when you can visit them without paying an entrance fee:
The sites of MI "Old Plovdiv" are Balabanov’s House, Hindlian House, Nedkovich House, Klianti House, Stambolian House, Hippocrates Old Pharmacy, Zlatyu Boyadzhiev Gallery, Philippopolis Odeon, Ancient Theater, Roman Stadium and The Little Early Christian Basilica.
Visiting the Roman Stadium is free at any time for individual and group visits by adults and students. For the other sites, free visits can be made:
- Every first Thursday of the month for students and retirees;
- For guides of organized groups of more than 10 people;
- Members of ICOM, ICOMOS, The Association of Guides in Bulgaria,
professional organizations and journalists - after legitimation;
- Donors, former and current employees of MI "Old Plovdiv";
- Official delegations and guests of Plovdiv Municipality;
- September 6 - the Day of the Unification of Bulgaria and the Holiday of Plovdiv;
- European Night of Museums and Galleries;
- Plovdiv Night of Museums and Galleries;
The City Art Gallery of Plovdiv includes five exposition houses. The entrance of the Gallery is free of charge for the following visitors and events, upon submission of a valid document as follows:
- Children up to 7 years old;
- For people with special needs (persons with a disability exceeding 50%);
- Guides and companions of organized groups of more than 10 people;
- Former and current employees of the Gallery;
- Members of ICOM, ICOMOS, members of creative alliances related to fine arts and journalists;
- Official delegations and guests of Plovdiv Municipality;
- Every first Thursday of the month;
- September 6 - the Day of the Unification of Bulgaria and the Holiday of Plovdiv;
- May 18 - European Night of Museums and Galleries;
- During the Plovdiv Night of Museums and Galleries;
Regional Museum of Natural History Plovdiv - the second largest and richest museum of natural history in the country, with a modern and contemporary exposition and an enhanced nature conservation idea. The entrance of the Museum is free of charge for the following visitors and events, upon submission of a valid document as follows:
- Every first Thursday of the month - for students, retirees and children up to 7 years of age;
- Guides of organized groups of more than 10 people;
- For people with special needs (after submitting a valid document);
- Members of ICOM, ICOMOS, The Association of Guides in Bulgaria, professional organizations and journalists - after legitimation;
- Official delegations and guests of Plovdiv Municipality;
- For the contributors of the museum, the members of NGO Friends of the RNNH-Plovdiv;
- For former and current employees;
- September 6 - the Day of the Unification of Bulgaria and the Holiday of Plovdiv;
- May 18 - European Night of Museums and Galleries;
- During the Plovdiv Night of Museums and Galleries;
The Historical Museum immerses its visitors in the past of Bulgaria, connected with the Unification of Bulgaria in 1885, the Bulgarian Revival, the book publishing in Bulgaria in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and the contemporary history.
The entrance to the museum expositions is free of charge:
- Every first Thursday of the month;
- On March 3 and September 6;
- During the International Museum Day;
- European Night of Museums;
- Night of Museums and Galleries;
- For guides and companions of organized groups of more than 10 people;
- Members of ICOM, ICOMOS, and journalists - after legitimation;
- For employees of the museum;
- For contributors and members of the Friends of the Museum Club;
- For official delegations and guests of Plovdiv Municipality;
The museum doesn’t work during the weekend.
The Archaeological Museum is one of the first cultural institutions in Bulgaria, which arose at the end of the 19th century, immediately after the liberation of the country in 1878. Its unique exhibits can be seen for free:
- Every first Thursday of the month - for students and retirees;
- For guides of organized groups of more than 10 people;
- Members of ICOM, ICOMOS, The Association of Guides in Bulgaria, professional organizations and journalists - after legitimation;
- Contributors, former and current employees;
- Official delegations and guests of Plovdiv Municipality;

- Night of Museums and Galleries;
The museum doesn’t work on Monday during the summer and on Sundays and Mondays during the winter working hours (November - May).
The Ethnographic Museum is one of the preferred places in Plovdiv for cultural tourism, and it also often organizes various events and performances of dancing and musical performers. You can visit it for free:
