There is an area under the hills where you can easily find around 10 spots where doners are prepared, and they are only a few steps away from one another. As we have previously written in one of our texts ranking the best doners in Plovdiv, and according to a recent study, they are one of the most preferred options for “fast food” among Bulgarians.
In its original recipe, doner is usually prepared from a meat kebab, which is cooked on a vertically placed skewer. The seasoned meat, arranged in the shape of an inverted cone, rotates slowly. The outer layer of the meat is cut into thin slices while cooking. The most commonly used types of meat are mutton, lamb, and rarely chicken. It is accompanied by freshly sliced tomatoes, while the fried potatoes are placed separately on a plate, or wrapped in flatbread with additional vegetables. All this is flavored with a special sauce, which according to connoisseurs, is an extremely important ingredient that perfectly balances the aromas of the other products. Then it is wrapped in freshly baked bread, which the master prepares himself. In many places, doners are served on a plate as portions, and not wrapped as sandwiches.
The place where you can taste various doners under the hills is definitely the area of the Central Hali. Some time ago, we defined it as Little Turkey in the center of Plovdiv, as this is the place with a rich variety of Turkish food. Now, we will examine all the doner spots in the area.
It can be safely said that the most popular spots are Alex Foods and Yogi Fast Food, where there are almost always people queuing. They are two of the oldest spots in the area. At Alex Foods, one can order their food at a self-service machine, and they also have an indoor eating area. The reviews for both Alex Foods and Yogi Fast Food’s doners claim that their food has a standard taste, even though sometimes the fried potatoes are too much.
A new fast-food spot, Diamant Foods, is expected to open on the opposite side of the street, near the Helikon bookstore. This is a fast-food chain from Asenovgrad, offering different types of doners, burgers, and various foods for on-the-go and takeaway.
At Oriental’s place, one can also enjoy the Greek version of the doner—gyros—with tzatziki sauce instead of the traditional garlic sauce. This food chain restaurant is also very popular and is yet another one of their spots.
You can try traditional Turkish doners at Pasha and right in front of the Djumaya Mosque at Roza. In the narrow street between the two, there is also a small spot that is popular among the people who live in that area.
On the other side of the Central Hali, right next to the famous pirozhki, one can again enjoy doners and pizzas. A few days ago, we reported that a new shawarma place is to open in Shirikoto (The Broad Space) in Kapana, as shawarma is doner’s Arab version.
That’s how, in only a few blocks, we counted 8 doner spots, with a 9th expected to open. There is no doubt that this is the destination for every fan of this fast-food temptation.
