Billiard or pool games originated from a cricket-like game played in 15th century France. Back then, the game was played outdoors, on grass, and the goal was to pass the ball through small holes. Subsequently, the game has moved indoors, on a table.
In the 16th century it was played on a table covered with green cloth. The tables didn’t have special boards, but a simple partition was used. Characteristic of the then form of the game was that the balls weren’t hit, as in modern billiard games, but were rolled with the help of wooden sticks called maces. The word billiards comes from the French word billart, meaning stick.
The pool cue replaced the mace in the late 17th century. A major reason for the appearance of the cue was the difficulty of playing the balls when they were too close to the side of the table.
The greatest contribution to the development of billiard games to their modern form was made by England. After 1800, chalk began to be used there to increase the friction between the stick and the ball. At that time, however, the leather tip of the cue wasn’t common yet. About 30 years later, it began to be widely used, thus increasing the precision and contact time between the cue stick and the ball.
